The truth is everyone gets bored and there is a point in the summer where it becomes too hot to go outside. When that happens your senior who is choosing to age in place is at risk of being bored just like any young adult. They will need to find summer activities that help them stay cool, help them focus on a fun task, and something that is going to keep them from feeling isolated. These activities can be made easier with the support of home care services.
Here are some things they can try doing this summer, and keep in mind they will never be too old to start a new hobby or try something new with the help of senior home care.
Inside Swimming Classes
Although it seems like the time of year when you’d want to go outside, this is not always the case for all seniors. Many elderly individuals need to be near bathrooms and need to be in temperature-regulated spaces. Luckily, if your loved one has the urge to swim many community centers will host senior pool classes like water aerobics or even just time to swim or walk laps as a senior. If your senior mom or dad needs help getting from the house to the pool this is something that home care can help them with. They can provide non-emergency transportation so your loved one is not limited in the things they can do this summer.
Create a Shady Picnic
Your loved one may not be able to move around very much but they should be getting outside every day because it is good for their mental and physical health. This is something that can be fun for a senior and home care to do together to build a relationship or something that a senior and other friends or family can do together as well. If your loved one has a local park they may even host events like music in the park or movies in the park as well. It’s a chance to spend time together, eat fresh fruits, and enjoy the outdoor environment. Your seniors should be around people to maintain socialization even as they get older.
Painting On The Deck
If your senior has a sunroom with AC or a shady deck, summer is the perfect chance to try painting. They can use oil paints or watercolors to create fun summery pieces. There are many follow-along tutorials that can help them understand what steps to take and even what supplies they need. Summer is the time to try new hobbies or pick up ones they have loved before.
Cook New Recipes
This is the time of year when food becomes harder to eat. Food is one of the best ways to heat up the body but this is not always good news in the summertime when a senior is already trying to stay cool. Your loved one may want to spend some time in the kitchen trying new recipes that will help them stay cool and full all day. It’s time to find the cold dishes they know they love and even teach those to home care so they can help prepare dishes for a senior.

Prior to establishing 24/7 Coastal Contact, Ms. King worked for 30 years in the health care industry. Her experience began providing direct patient care. Eventually, she transitioned into home care and home infusion, then acquired her HCS-D certification as a Home Health specialty coder where she learned about the administrative burden facing Home Health and Home Care providers.
It became clear that after-hours customer service was a major toll home care industry and it was with this need in mind that 24/7 Coastal Contact was founded. Since 2018, 24/7 Coastal Contact has grown explosively. Now, we provide service to over 40 agencies in over 24 states with a 95% retention of service rate.
